In an attempt to show the world how it feels about dropping its nuclear weapons program, Iran this week announced that it has reached the ability to enrich uranium to 20%.  While to some people this means nothing it means a bunch to people and governments who understand what is going on behind the scenes. The Iranians may have a history lesson in mind in dealing with this issue and the United States. Remember that this regime came to power under President Jimmy Carter.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad made a point of announcing that his nation now has the ability to enrich its own uranium to the 20% level, so what does it mean? It means that the American and European plans of trading raw uranium with Iran and then enriching it for them so it could be used in a nuclear power plant is now moot. The entire deal is now off the table as being unneeded. Iran just demonstrated to the West that it is capable of doing what it needs to in order to have nuclear power without their help. By doing that they have rendered the entire premise of the Western plans obsolete. This means two things.

First, Iran is now in a position to demand more or something other than fuel for its nuclear reactors. What “more” could be only the Iranians know. Second, the next step is further enriching the uranium to the 80% and above level which is weapons grade. Since  many in the West had no idea that they were able to enrich to 20%, how far and how fast they can go to the next step becomes a pretty pressing question doesn’t it? The fact that the only real strong voice of warning is coming from France is almost stunning in and of itself. Obama and his foreign policy seems to be in utter disarray. Even during his State of the Union address he spent almost no time, about 11% of his speech, on his foreign policy plans and issues. Without strong American leadership it will be hard if not impossible to stop Iran on its drive toward nuclear weapons.

More and more people are starting to call Obama the second Jimmy Carter, they are comparing his foreign affairs to Carter’s and one place they all come back to is Iran. If the Iranians have made this link as well, they know that they can just keep pushing forward and the odds that Obama will stop them are almost nonexistent. Americans have gotten side tracked with health care, the Christmas Bomber and the generally bad economy. Obama’s lack of ability to deal with the Iranian problem is being covered by other issues that dominate the media coverage. The truth is that the Iranians know this as well, they can see what is taking place in the nation and can read the signs. This is a high stakes game they are playing and they are employing every tool they have in an attempt to succeed.

One thing is certain, Jimmy Carter was the worst president in at least 50 years. For Obama to start being placed in the same category as him only a year into his term shows just how weak he really is. That’s bad for us, you see the Iranians know that too.
