Armed Maersk Alabama Crew stop 2nd Somali Pirate Attack – NRA 1 vs Pirates 0

The Associated Press is reporting that the cargo ship Maersk Alabama which was attacked 7 months ago by pirates was attacked again this week. This time the pirates never got to the ship, they were repelled by armed private security on board the freighter.
The ship Maersk Alabama became famous when the Captain of the ship was being held by Somali pirates after a failed attempt to hijack the vessel. It was ended by the Navy SEALS shooting the hostage takers and freeing the Captain. The US flagged ship has now been attacked 2 twice in less than 7 months. Back in the good old days, this may have been considered an act of war, although now I’m sure its just a man caused disaster. After the first attack the ship hired on private security forces who are armed with small arms and various other devices like the long range high decibel noise cannons. This combination proved effective in stopping the attempted hi jacking this time around. Even after the event many in the maritime community are firmly against arming security people and/or the crews. Various other sources report that approximately 20% of the cargo ships sailing off East Africa are armed.
The statement released by the spokeswoman for the company who owns the ship, a Amanda Derick, pretty much sums it up. ” The crew and the Captain are safe”. “The appropriate security measures were taken. Thats the main thing, every one’s safe”. I think that is pretty much what the idea was of the founding fathers when the wrote the 2nd Amendment, don’t you?
